The mission of Rocky Mount Academy -- to prepare its students for the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities that they will encounter in life and in college -- begins in Lower School.
Head of Lower School

Lower School at Rocky Mount Academy is a world of learning experiences that include a solid Lower School at Rocky Mount Academy is a world of learning experiences that include a solid and comprehensive foundation upon which students build their futures. Our curriculum is phonics-based language arts, hands on math and science, daily social studies which are the cornerstones of the Lower School program.
Enrichment courses are incorporated into the daily schedules which enhance academic instruction and enrich the students' overall growth and development. These courses include: art, music, international studies, technology, physical education, library, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).
Our students travel off campus for a variety of educational experiences throughout the year, and each year, guest speakers enrich our students through sharing their work in areas of knowledge.
Our experienced staff of 16 teachers and 4 assistants in Grades Pre-K through 5 is committed to providing quality instruction to meet the needs of every child in Lower School. For students who need additional support to reach their academic goals, our Hill Center program and Learning Skills Program offer students the opportunity for one-on-one or small group tutoring and enrichment.
In Lower School, the commitment to our families is to provide a rich and thorough educational experience for students that will pave the way for success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in our school mission as we prepare for the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities to be encountered in life and college.
We make it a priority to know each student well and to create classroom environments where every child is acknowledged and feels a safe sense of belonging. Within small classes, students receive the direct instruction and support they need to begin bridging the gap between their academic performance and potential. Our program places an emphasis on developmentally appropriate challenges that nurture a sense of self-discipline, resilience, and confidence in our learners.
Our LS at RMA builds a supportive community in the classroom giving children the time and opportunity they need to practice important social skills. We promote student independence and ownership allowing children to make good choices. Our academic program is full of enrichment opportunities in fine arts, physical education and in Global Studies.
At RMA, we partner with families who have like goals and want their children to be loved and understood yet challenged and motivated. We integrate character education and responsibility to give back to our community.
I delight in watching our children transform into responsible citizens at RMA where they experience the foundation for all learning. Rocky Mount Academy is a special place to be, and we appreciate your interest in learning more about our school.
