Isadora, Therapy Dog,
Visits Third Grade
February 4, 2008

A little ball of fur brought a third grade reading selection to life today.  Recently, our third graders read in their Harcourt Trophies book, about Rosie, a therapy dog in New York.  Now, they have met and played with Isadora, a certified therapy dog from Virginia.  An 8 year-old pure bred Maltese, Isadora came to RMA with her best friend Gwen.  Our students learned about the temperament that Isadora must keep to serve as a therapy dog, tests that a dog must go through to become certified, and national tragedies when therapy dogs have been called into action, including Sept. 11 and Hurricane Katrina.

For the past five years, Isadora has worked in hospitals and nursing homes as well as being a "Tail Waggin' Tutor" in schools.  She lets children who need practice reading out loud read to her, but today she just brought smiles to our students' faces.  Coming back to school on Monday was a lot easier with Isadora's help.

Isadora brought an autographed copy of It Takes A Dog To Raise A Village for the third grade.  She also brought materials on how a family can look into their dog becoming a therapy dog and a video on safety measures for children handling dogs that are strangers to them.
