RMA Odyssey of the Mind Team Places Sixth in World

The 6th Place OM World Champs are Rocky Mount Academy students (left to right, kneeling) Kelsey Strickland, Clare Mayo, Emily Urquhart, (left to right, standing) Amelia Nash, Morgan Minges, Olivia Arnold, and Ashley Warren.

We are very proud of the RMA Odyssey of the Mind team who recently returned from the World competition where they competed against 48 other teams and placed Sixth with an Honorable Mention. The following story was written when they won the State Championship which qualified them to represent NC in the World Finals.........

Though the Rocky Mount Academy OM team performed illusions at the Odyssey of the Mind State competition on April 5, the first place trophy is no illusion.  They are the State Champs.  They beat out nine other teams performing the “Fooled Ya” problem in the Middle School division.

The OM organization thinks up problems each year from which the teams from around the world have to choose one to solve through performance.  The RMA team of 6th and 7th grade girls chose to solve “Fooled Ya.”

“We knew we could be creative with this particular problem.  We knew that a lot of other teams would be doing the other creative problem because this one was more of a challenge,” Urquhart explained.  The team was required to create and present a performance that includes two characters who fool the others by performing at least five illusions during the performance.  The challenge did not scare them off.  They started thinking about current events, which made them think of the West Nile virus.  And from there, their solution was born.  Fevers.  They each took on a fever identity – some real, some imaginary.  They were Yellow Fever, Cat Scratch Fever, Scarlet Fever, Spring Fever, Hay Fever, Disco Fever, and Rocky Mount Fever.  While these fevers were trying to stay away from drugs, in order to prevent their demise, they sent a parallel message for youth to say no to drugs.

They got no help, per OM rules, from their coaches.  Warren said, “They would sit there with smirks on their faces because they knew a way to solve a problem we might be having, but they wouldn’t say a word.”  Then, maybe later on at night, as Coach Urquhart said, “their faces would light up when those mental ‘light bulbs’ would click on and an idea would be hatched.”

RMA has a history of winning OM competitions.  They have won regionals for the past four years, have had State Champs three of the last four years, and placed 2nd in World in 2000.

RMA Student Wins 2003 Morehead Scholarship

Rocky Mount Academy is proud of Nicholas Mosley who won the prestigious Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Nicholas is the only student from Nash and Edgecombe counties to win the scholarship this year.

Nicholas, son of RMA alumni Michael and Anne Mosley, has attended Rocky Mount Academy since Kindergarten.  "We're so grateful ... to Rocky Mount Academy for giving him such a good background.  The school has put him where he is," Anne commented just moments after Nicholas had received the good news on March 7.

The Morehead is worth approximately $70,000.  In addition to tuition, it also covers student expenses, the purchase of a laptop computer, and outstanding summer enrichment programs for Morehead Scholars only.  The university gives out only 50 Morehead Scholarships a year.

State competition will be sweeter than ever before because, for the first time, we will be competing in our hometown.  OM teams from around North Carolina will gather at N.C.Wesleyan College on Saturday, April 5.  Come out and cheer on our great team!
