Hello Guest! Welcome to the Fifth Grade page!
Welcome to the exciting world of Fifth Grade! This is a year of transition for students as they become the "Seniors" of the lower school, developing the skills they will need to become independent learners. Mrs. McCain and Ms. Willis work together to foster the student's enthusiasm and interest in learning while encouraging creative thinking and problem solving; Mrs. McCain in the Language Arts and Ms. Willis in Math, Science and Social Studies.
The fifth grade Language Arts curriculum helps students prepare for the future by strengthening reading, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing skills. Students will use the Harcourt reading series to enhance reading comprehension skills and expand their vocabulary. Students will read various novels to develop an appreciation for outstanding literature. The comprehensive narrative writing guide, Empowering Writers, provides students with a solid foundation for process writing. Daily language practice and vocabulary activities will focus on improving writing, grammar, and language mechanics.
In Mathematics, Fifth Graders will continue their work in the Saxon Math Series, a highly structured program that enables students to gain mastery through the daily practice of skills and concepts taught in earlier lessons. The Fifth Grade Social Studies curriculum is centered around North American Geography, American history, and Global Studies while Science lessons include inquiry based learning activities in Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, as well as lessons in health and fitness.
In addition to the academics of Fifth Grade, the students take their first overnight field trip with their classmates. We will enrich our study of American History with a visit to Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown in May.
Fifth grade is a wonderful year in the life of a child and we are excited and honored to be working together to ensure that each student has a motivating and safe learning experience in the classroom. |
