Rocky Mount Academy is a college preparatory PK-12 school that carefully blends personal challenge and individual support to nurture the growth of its students. In addition to the fundamental disciplines, RMA requires students to take special classes in music, art, technology, world languages, library, guidance, and physical education in an effort to also mold a person who will be creative and aesthetically sensitive and who will appreciate the importance of physical well being.
We believe that it is important to provide an academic environment where students can learn and develop higher order thinking and problem solving skills for life and college. We work with our students so that they may progress beyond simply knowing information or memorizing facts to analyzing, synthesizing, and applying their knowledge effectively. From pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, we strive to have our students become increasingly independent with a growing understanding and appreciation of their individual style of learning.
With our relatively small class size, education at RMA can be more exciting and stimulating. As a matter of fact, we are proud that our students, when asked, described RMA as "challenging, safe, fun, nurturing, and friendly." Fewer students in class means that all students have an opportunity to engage in the discussion and ask questions. There is no getting lost in the crowd at RMA. It also means that teachers have more chance to develop a positive relationship with students, and there are times built into the day that a student can seek extra help, if necessary. Students are encouraged to ask for help and to not be embarrassed by doing so. We like to say that it is "cool" at RMA to admit that you have worked hard. Students know that they are here to make their futures brighter and that they have to work for what they want.
Finally, by promoting the value and importance of respecting oneself and others and of giving back to the community, we hope to instill a committment to live a life of integrity. Again, we believe that we have a responsibility, in concert with the parents, to develop the whole child. For when that child leaves our nest, we hope that his or her life will be better, richer, fuller because of the experince that he or she had at Rocky Mount Academy. |
