Hello Guest! Welcome to Second Grade!
Second grade is an important year and a time to hone skills learned in first grade. While our students will be busy each day learning and practicing new skills, we think it is also important for them to have fun! Each child will spend half of the day with Mrs. Locke for Language Arts and half of the day with Ms. Weaver for Math, Science, and Social Studies.
In Language Arts students will be exposed to a variety of genres in literature. We will continue daily phonics instruction and use a smorgasbord of activities to help students apply these principles in all that they read. A big emphasis in second grade will be on further developing students' narrative writing skills as they learn the steps of the writing process. Second graders will continue to refine their manuscript handwriting and will learn cursive handwriting after Christmas. Spelling words and dictation sentences will be studied weekly correlating the spelling patterns they have learned in reading through their phonics study. Students will also learn new grammar rules and the application of them in their writing and speaking.
The Science curriculum will foster the students' understanding of life, Earth, and physical science. They will use the scientific method as they engage in course-related activities and experiments. In Social Studies, second graders will develop an appreciation of how people work with one another to meet their needs. The students will learn about different groups to which people belong, where people live, how events in America's history have promoted change, and the roles and responsibilities of citizens. Emphasis will be placed on map and globe skills. In math, the students will learn a variety of new concepts and extend those already presented to them. They will enhance their understanding of numbers to 1,000 with a major focus on addition and subtraction of two- and three- digit numbers. They will explore ideas in geometry, interpretation of data, probability, and measurement.
